Mark R. Kent A 4-year-old girl was killed Monday night and her grandfather was injured in an all-terrain vehicle accident in Foley, according to police. Another girl riding on the ATV escaped injury, police Lt. David White said. The names of the victims were not released Monday. The accident took place about 6:15 p.m. on private property near where South Chestnut Street meets East Franklin Avenue, southeast of downtown Foley. White said the man was riding the two girls along a path when they struck a wire that was across the path. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene, White said. Her grandfather was taken to South Baldwin Hospital in Foley for treatment, White said. He did not have the age of the second girl who was on the ATV. The accident remains under investigation. The scene of the accident is about two blocks west of South Pecan Street, about half a mile east of South McKenzie Street and about one-third of a mile south of East Laurel Street. -- Source: http://www.al.com/news/press-register/metro.ssf?/base/news/125482059175900.xml&coll=3

“During the past decade, I have personally had six out of seven elk hunts ruined by the careless intrusions of ATV operators. This epidemic has forced me to abandon one prime hunting area after another, only to encounter the same situation elsewhere. The shameful part of this picture is that the overwhelming majority of these ATV’ers are young and healthy, not decrepit or physically challenged. Maybe these riders would be more respectful of other people's outdoor experience if they knew we could ID them." - Bill Sustrich, Colorado Backcountry Hunters and Anglers |
