Officers will keep close eye on Memorial Day vacationers

PHOENIX - Holiday weekends in Arizona typically attract off road vehicles, and this weekend will be no exception.

State agencies including the Coconino Sheriff's office, Arizona Game and Fish and the U.S. Forest service are gearing up for increased patrols near Cinder lake, Munds Park, Williams, and Flagstaff.

Off highway vehicles account for increased calls for medical emergencies, accidents and lost persons during holiday weekends officials say.

This Memorial Day, officers and Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) volunteers in Northern Arizona will be making contact with the public providing information about OHV laws and OHV safety.

The Coconino County Sheriff's Office want to remind the public "to ride and drive responsibly and safely and to obey all laws."

Law enforcement hopes this early effort will reduce the incidents of injury and death and provide a safe and enjoyable outdoor summer recreation season.

This epidemic has forced me to abandon one prime hunting area after another, only to encounter the same situation elsewhere. The shameful part of this picture is that the overwhelming majority of these ATV’ers are young and healthy, not decrepit or physically challenged. Maybe these riders would be more respectful of other people's outdoor experience if they knew we could ID them."
