VICTORVILLE - An ATV rider was sentenced to seven years in prison for running over a Hesperia man outside of the victim’s residence.

James Allen Bogdan, 29, of Hesperia pleaded guilty to assault with a motor vehicle causing great bodily injury. Bogdan received additional two years in prison because of his prior strike. He had been convicted of firstdegree burglary in 2000 in San Bernardino County. He was sentenced Friday at Victorville Superior Court.

The 49-year-old victim was watching his grandchildren outside his home in the 9200 block of Glendale Avenue in Hesperia in July when Bogdan traveled down the street in his ATV at a high speed, according to a probation officer’s report on the case.

The victim walked into the street, raised his cane in the air and yelled at Bogdan to slow down, according to the report. A witness said the suspect argued back and asked what he had done wrong and why the victim and his son were yelling at him.

Bogdan then took off at a high speed near the victim and hit him with his vehicle, causing the victim to fly into the air over the handlebars and land on the ground, according to the report. When deputies arrived at the scene, the victim was bleeding from the top of his head and face. The witness told investigators he wasn’t sure if Bogdan hit the victim intentionally or not.

The victim was airlifted to Loma Linda Medical Center and later improved to stable condition.
