SHASTA LAKE A new Forest Order issued by the Shasta-Trinity National Forest is intended to protect natural resources in the Shasta Lake Ranger District. The order prohibits the possession or use of motorized vehicles off of National Forest System roads in the Jones Valley and Silverthorn areas on the Pit River Arm of Shasta Lake. The closure order will prohibit driving motor vehicles off roads above the high water mark of Shasta Lake, at an elevation of 1,069 feet, within the closure area. Driving below the high water mark of Shasta Lake will be permitted. Signs and maps are posted in the area to identify the closure area boundaries. The closure is in effect through Sept. 28, 2011. The public is encouraged to utilize the Chappie-Shasta OHV Area's nearly 250 miles of routes and trails as an alternative. This OHV area is on the west side of Shasta Dam. The Bureau of Reclamation allows visitors with a valid driver's license and proof of insurance access across Shasta Dam. Violators of the new forest order are subject to fines of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both. -- Source: http://www.redbluffdailynews.com/news/ci_13617974

“As a rancher who leases public lands for cattle, I’ve seen my share of cut fences and rangeland damaged by ORV use. I’ve also experienced ORV trespass onto my private lands. But I’ve had no way to identify the culprits when reporting trespass or illegal ORV use to local law enforcement. Congress should require that ORVs used on public lands have visible identification plates or decals. Doing so would remove the anonymity enjoyed by ORV riders who are bent on breaking the rules.” - Ambers Thornburgh, second-generation rancher from Oregon who grazes cattle on his private land and adjacent lands leased from the Bureau of Land Management |
