Recreation managers at Los Padres National Forest are seeking public comments on project proposals for the California Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) grant program, the U.S. Forest Service announced. The public comment period begins March 8 and runs through April 4. A two-step application process is required to allow public comment and feedback before final submittal. May 2 is the deadline for final applications. Los Padres has submitted applications for two projects. The first includes ground operations, planning, restoration and education and safety. The second grant is for law enforcement activities. The preliminary application is available at www.ohv.parks.ca.gov. Hard copies are available by calling Jeff Bensen at 961-5744. An open house is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Santa Lucia Ranger District Office, 1616 N. Carlotti Drive in Santa Maria. -- Source: http://www.santamariatimes.com/news/local/article_5590fd92-39ff-11e0-8532-001cc4c03286.html |

“As a rancher who leases public lands for cattle, I’ve seen my share of cut fences and rangeland damaged by ORV use. I’ve also experienced ORV trespass onto my private lands. But I’ve had no way to identify the culprits when reporting trespass or illegal ORV use to local law enforcement. Congress should require that ORVs used on public lands have visible identification plates or decals. Doing so would remove the anonymity enjoyed by ORV riders who are bent on breaking the rules.” - Ambers Thornburgh, second-generation rancher from Oregon who grazes cattle on his private land and adjacent lands leased from the Bureau of Land Management |
