Mark Strain Thankfully, there are only two roads leading east. One is Alligator Alley (I-75) and the other is East Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41). The Alley is well established, wide, two lanes in each direction and fast. The Trail is scenic, one lane in each direction, slow and prone to aggravating impatient drivers behind slower-moving vehicles. Add the constant stopping of tourists to snap a shot of a bird or gator they see alongside the road and the time it takes to get from our coast to the Miami-Dade line can be a test of one’s patience. So, why would we ever need a recreational facility at the edge of our county line, where it adjoins Miami-Dade? If Miami-Dade can posture such a facility as useful to Collier County residents, they may get us to cover some of their costs, while at the same time, Collier County may claim to have met some of the demands of the ATV enthusiasts. |

Curtis Morgan Unless you ride one, which is a blast, all-terrain vehicles can seem annoying. Knobby tires turn pasture into mud pit. Some engines howl like angry tomcats. And since driving off the beaten pavement is all the fun, riders are often at odds with farmers, homeowners, park managers, environmentalists and, sometimes, police. |

Rick Neale Off-road outlaws rip down "No Trespassing" signs, dig unauthorized mud pits on private property, and race down rural roads drunk, pestering homeowners in northern Brevard County. These brazen daredevils, though a minority of the riders, triggered a proposed ATV-prohibition ordinance that alarmed hundreds of law-abiding riders and landowners across the Space Coast. |

John Davis NORTH PORT - After three years of relative quiet over the issue of off-road riding, city leaders are poised to permit ATV riders again -- but this time with what they hope is a compromise law that can accommodate riders and protect the peace and property of homeowners. .art_main_pic { width:250px; float:left; clear:left; } Today, city leaders are slated to finalize changes to the ATV law, removing the requirement that riders carry permission slips while drawing a half-mile buffer around homes as a no-ride zone. |

North Port, with roughly 50,000 vacant residential lots, many of them clustered in the northeastern section of the city, has long been an attractive location for all-terrain vehicle riders. That's fine for the ATV enthusiasts, but not so fine for people who live within earshot of the noisy vehicles. Nor is it fine for the riders to damage public property intended for other uses. |
