Viera -- A proposed ordinance intended to regulate all-terrain vehicles on private property in Brevard County has those who use them up in arms.

Approximately 60 people who against the measure showed up to voice their concern to commissioners Tuesday.

The idea spawns from recent reported noise, underage drinking and damage to wetlands on several private properties in the Canaveral Groves area of north Brevard, which are infractions difficult for deputies to enforce.

The ordinance would call for property owners with more than 5 acres of land to carry a minimum of $100,000 in liability insurance and pay a $25 registration fee to the sheriff's department.

However, there was enough outcry for commissioners to re-think the issue.

One possibility is to build an ATV park.

“If they were to build a park, I really think people would go there,” said Mark Youmans, who wants an ATV park. “It would be great revenue service for the county and state. I just think it's going to be a win-win situation for everyone.”

District 3 Commissioner Trudie Infantini will head up a task force on the matter to come up with a viable solution.

“During the past decade, I have personally had six out of seven elk hunts ruined by the careless intrusions of ATV operators. This epidemic has forced me to abandon one prime hunting area after another, only to encounter the same situation elsewhere. The shameful part of this picture is that the overwhelming majority of these ATV’ers are young and healthy, not decrepit or physically challenged. Maybe these riders would be more respectful of other people's outdoor experience if they knew we could ID them."
