I have been checking with other cities and I haven't heard anything good about ATV use." -- Bill Abbott, Seymour Police Chief, "Seymour Rejects ATVs on City Streets", McClatchy-Tribune (9/9/08)
- "All-terrain vehicles look like great fun for recreation, and the agile four-wheel-drive buggies are great tools for farmers and ranchers. But too often, we hear about careless accidents involving ATVs..ATVs are a motor vehicle, and as we've seen in the news lately, ATVs can injure riders. Respecting the machine for what it can do is the first step to avoiding injuries. The second is have the foresight to protect one's self just in case the ATV gets away from the rider." -- Journal Courier Editorial Board, "Quick Take: ATVs aren't as safe as everyone thinks", Journal and Courier (6/7/08)

Fort Wayne City Council’s move to ban motor vehicles on greenway trails may seem like yet another effort to legislate common sense. But given the numerous complaints police and greenway officials receive, the council is doing what’s needed to keep the recreational trails safe. In a preliminary vote Tuesday, the council unanimously supported a proposal to ban golf carts and other motorized vehicles from park paths and the greenway. The proposed ordinance makes needed exceptions for public safety and maintenance vehicles and motorized wheelchairs, as well as an odd exception for “electric personal assistive mobility devices,” also known as Segways. |

The City Council today is scheduled to discuss an ordinance to prohibit golf carts, scooters and other similar vehicles from the trails. Howard Greninger TERRE HAUTE — Drivers of all terrain vehicles, or ATVs, cannot travel on county roads as the Vigo County board of commissioners on Tuesday unanimously agreed not to enact a county off-road vehicle ordinance. “We have taken numerous calls [against this] and our concern is the enforcement that it would take if we put an ordinance in. When they buy an ATV, it clearly states that they are off-road vehicles,” Commissioner President Judith Anderson said. |

Owen County's decision to allow all-terrain vehicles on county roads is raising concerns that drivers won't install safety equipment or obtain proper registrations and insurance required to make them street legal. Acting against the advice of their attorney, county commissioners in the mostly rural county about 50 miles southwest of Indianapolis recently passed an ordinance allowing the vehicles, called ATVs, on county roads. The law becomes official if the commissioners sign it as planned at their Dec. 21 meeting. |
