ASH TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed during a hunting accident Sunday. Authorities said Airport High School student Charlie Ray Cox was with two other friends, both 17 years old, in a wooded area of Briar Hill Road north of Carleton Rockwood Road in Ash Township when the shooting occurred. |

Eric Sharp What was that about the best laid schemes of mice and men? Oh, yeah, they gang aft agley, as one of my countrymen put it. And while I can't say how the mice fared, the opening day of the archery deer season ganged agley for this human.
A wind that was supposed to be northwest was flat calm when I climbed into a tree stand after a quarter-mile walk on a two track through the woods. |

TRAVERSE CITY -- Grand Traverse County will hold a public hearing on a proposed ordinance to regulate the use of off-road vehicles on county and local roads when it meets today at 5 p.m. in the Governmental Center. The ordinance will include all roads banned to ORV use by either the townships or county road commission. The county board will consider any changes to the draft ordinance after the public hearing and vote on its final adoption Aug. 26. Copies of the ordinance are available at www.grandtraverse.org. |

Sheri McWhirter KALKASKA -- A fatal off-road vehicle collision in Kalkaska County's Orange Township left one downstate woman dead and sent two others to the hospital. Michigan State Police are investigating a crash that happened around 12:15 a.m. Saturday on East Trail, a designated off-road vehicle trail near Antler Road. Witnesses reported the four-wheeler was moving east when the driver lost control at an intersection with Antler Road, police said. Antler Road is a private road off of Hatley Road near Maple Creek and East Lake Swamp.

Big truck enthusiasts may find fewer places to play this summer in the Huron Manistee National Forest, according to federal officials who say wetland and other habitat damage is on the rise "It's fair to say we are cracking down on big truck gatherings," said Ken Arbogast, the public affairs officer for the national forest. |

The public can comment on a proposed ORV ordinance Tuesday morning, prior to the regular Cheboygan County Board of Commissioners meeting. The public hearing will begin at 9 a.m., with the regular meeting to follow at 9:30 a.m. Comments from the public will be considered prior to adoption of a final ordinance during the regular session. |

Chris Engle ELMIRA TWP. -- Elmira is the one township in Otsego County where off-road vehicles (ORVs) will be banned from all county roads within the township. At a special March meeting, the Elmira Township board voted 4-1 to close roads to ORVs. After Thursday’s regular township meeting, where some 50 people came to discuss the issue, the decision remained the same. |

COLUMBUS TWP. -- A Casco Township teenager was arrested early Sunday after police said he drove his all- terrain vehicle down the center of M-19 north of Richmond. A Macomb County deputy tried to stop the 18-year-old driver shortly before midnight, officials at the Michigan State Police Richmond post said. Troopers continued the pursuit into St. Clair County. The teen was caught near Ellsworth Road in Columbus Township after he slid the vehicle off the road while rounding a curve. The teen then ran into a wooded area about ¼ mile north of Division Road. He was arrested for fleeing and eluding, operating an off-road vehicle on a public highway and operating a vehicle in a dangerous manner. He was turned over to the Macomb County Sheriff Department. The chase lasted about 30 minutes. No injuries were reported. |
