TRAVERSE CITY -- Grand Traverse County will hold a public hearing on a proposed ordinance to regulate the use of off-road vehicles on county and local roads when it meets today at 5 p.m. in the Governmental Center.

The ordinance will include all roads banned to ORV use by either the townships or county road commission. The county board will consider any changes to the draft ordinance after the public hearing and vote on its final adoption Aug. 26. Copies of the ordinance are available at www.grandtraverse.org.

“As a rancher who leases public lands for cattle, I’ve seen my share of cut fences and rangeland damaged by ORV use. I’ve also experienced ORV trespass onto my private lands. But I’ve had no way to identify the culprits when reporting trespass or illegal ORV use to local law enforcement. Congress should require that ORVs used on public lands have visible identification plates or decals. Doing so would remove the anonymity enjoyed by ORV riders who are bent on breaking the rules.”
