Community Voices Demand Action in Missouri
Missourians are increasingly voicing their concerns about a growing contingent of reckless riders who break the law, damage public and private land, injure themselves and others, and ruin hunting, fishing and hiking experiences for the rest of us. - "The number of injuries is higher than motorcycles because people don't wear helmets...I see a lot of intoxicated riders as well. And it always astounds me to see people out there riding with their 3-year-olds." -- Dr. Robert Beckman, an emergency room physician at St. Anthony's Medical Center, "ATV accidents, complaints on the rise", Jefferson County Journal (6/10/08)

Some were almost complete skeletons. Others were fragments — a rib here, a vertebra there. "Honestly, it looked like a snowstorm had hit," Griffith said. |

Sarah AuBuchaon In the blink of an eye a family outing on an ATV tragically changed former Arnold resident Meaghan Bauer's life forever. Bauer was just 9 years old when her father's four-wheeler flipped over with the two of them, almost instantly killing her dad in February 1998. "I was driving the four-wheeler and we went up a hill," she said. "My dad told me to go back up the hill again and we flipped backward. It threw both of us off."Bauer said her dad, who had landed just behind her, leaned over, kissed her on the cheek and asked if she was OK. Then he fell away and his nose started bleeding. |

Speeding down the road, splashing through a creek, or riding on the tracks may seem fun on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). But, doing so is dangerous and illegal in the state of Missouri. The Missouri State Highway Patrol wants ATV operators and owners to be aware of the laws, regulations, and safety measures that should be taken when operating a ATV. Certificate of Ownership Section 301.703, RSMo., states it is unlawful for any person to own an ATV in this state unless a certificate of ownership (title) has been issued by the Department of Revenue. Application for a certificate of ownership must be made within 30 days after the owner acquires the ATV. |
