The Mesquite Police Department frequently receives reports of off-highway vehicles operating on private property without permission of the land owner.

A rider MUST have permission to ride an OHV on private property and may be subject to prosecution if found to be riding on private property without permission.

The City of Mesquite recently adopted an ordinance (Bill #415), which permits OHV’s to travel on designated public streets in order to reach an area open for OHV travel.

In the Old West, the cattlemen fought the sheep herders.

In the New Old West, it's the off-road drivers railing against the folks who moved to rural Nevada to enjoy scenic mountain views from the peace and quiet of their own front porches.

For years there's been trouble brewing in them thar hills around Pahrump and no one knows that better than Louis DeCanio and his peace-loving wife, who live almost side-by-side with ATV enthusiasts.

The Bureau of Land Management is asking the public’s help in identifying who tore up the land and broke through a fence at the Silver Saddle Ranch off River Road over the weekend.

Evidence at the scene indicates that on Saturday night, a four-wheel drive vehicle drove down into the Silver Saddle Ranch from an area closed to off-road vehicles on Prison Hill, according to a BLM news release.

When the driver reached the ranch, the road was closed off by a gate, so the driver drove his vehicle through the boundary fence adjacent to the main visitor gate.

Their differences, at least as presented to this crowd of environmentally-concerned citizens, were in their nuances of approach, priorities and background.

The release of the draft environmental impact report represents an important milestone in regulating motorized travel in the forest, which straddles the crest of the Sierra northwest of Lake Tahoe. The area is heavily used by residents of the Reno area.

The plan's goal is to protect a fragile landscape while at the same time providing a "challenging and diverse" road and trail system for off-highway users, Forest Supervisor Tom Quinn said.

“During the past decade, I have personally had six out of seven elk hunts ruined by the careless intrusions of ATV operators. This epidemic has forced me to abandon one prime hunting area after another, only to encounter the same situation elsewhere. The shameful part of this picture is that the overwhelming majority of these ATV’ers are young and healthy, not decrepit or physically challenged. Maybe these riders would be more respectful of other people's outdoor experience if they knew we could ID them."
