CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE - A jury found Middle Township resident Kenneth Copson guilty of aggravated asault and eluding police, both second-degree crimes, in connection with the May 15, 2008 assault of Middle Township police Officer Steven Novsak.

Copson was riding an all-terrain vehicle early that morning when he hit Novsak in the leg on a Middle Township road.

Copson was also found guilty of the fourth-degree charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Copson had been free on bail, but Senior Assistant Prosecutor Jim Herlihy asked that Copson be placed in custody. He said Copson faces a lenghty prison term of between five to 10 years and he should now be considered a flight risk

Superior Court Judge Raymond Batten agreed and had Copson placed in handcuffs. Defense attorney Joseph Rodgers said Copson was a longtime Cape May County resident and was not going to leave the area.

Copson, currently on probation for an assault charge, will be sentenced at 9 a.m. Jan. 29.

“Farmers as a group rarely tend to want more government regulation. But the growing problem of trespassing caused by illegal riders spurred our membership into action to pass common-sense visible identification and ORV enforcement measures. We are proud that we were able to work with rider groups to find a solution that all sides could agree to.”
