Officials with the Cibola National Forest have come up with some alternatives for managing motor vehicle travel throughout the Mountainair ranger district. The district is hosting three open houses next week for the public to review and comment on the proposals. All of the action alternatives would change the existing system and prohibit cross-country travel. Officials say the district has had a proliferation of unauthorized routes as a result of increased off-highway vehicle use, especially during hunting season. The New Mexico Off Highway Vehicle Alliance says it's concerned that the district's plans would ban the use of all motor vehicles from a majority of roads in the Manzano and Gallinas Mountains. The public has 30 days to comment on the proposals. -- |

"The problem has been ongoing for several years now. There has been a lot of off-road vehicle abuse, a lot of fences have been cut, a lot of habitat destruction." -- Zen Mocarski, public information office for Arizona Game and Fish Department, "Abuse of public lands forces restrictions", Verde Independent (3/20/10) |
