A Southport man has been arrested following his indictment in connection with a fatal all terrain vehicle crash in May. Steven C. Stickler, 60, of Sagetown Road, was indicted by a Chemung County grand jury on charges of second degree vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated. Stickler was operating a John Deere Gator ATV around 11:30 p.m. May 28 on Kinner Hill Road in the Town of Southport when passenger Joshua L. Long, 24, of Pine City, was thrown from the vehicle and killed. Stickler is currently in the county jail awaiting arraignment in Chemung County Court. The Chemung County Sheriff's Office was assisted in the investigation by the state police accident reconstruction unit and the Chemung County District Attorney's Office. -- |

“As a rancher who leases public lands for cattle, I’ve seen my share of cut fences and rangeland damaged by ORV use. I’ve also experienced ORV trespass onto my private lands. But I’ve had no way to identify the culprits when reporting trespass or illegal ORV use to local law enforcement. Congress should require that ORVs used on public lands have visible identification plates or decals. Doing so would remove the anonymity enjoyed by ORV riders who are bent on breaking the rules.” - Ambers Thornburgh, second-generation rancher from Oregon who grazes cattle on his private land and adjacent lands leased from the Bureau of Land Management |
