LUMBERTON -- A neighborhood dispute over a four-wheeling child ended in a death Saturday in Lumberton.

Robeson County Sheriff Kenneth Sealey said the department received a call that a man had been shot, around 4:30 p.m.

When investigators arrived on the scene five minutes later, Stoney McNeill, 54, of the 300 block of Mud Alley Road in Lumberton, was found lying dead, apparently from a gunshot wound, Sealey said.

Investigators charged McNeill's neighbor, 38-year-old Joey Lewis, of the 200 block of Mud Alley Road, with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Sealey said the men were arguing about a juvenile relative of Lewis who was four-wheeling along Mud Alley Road.

McNeill told Lewis the child would tear up the dirt road by repeatedly driving the four-wheeler on it.

When the argument escalated, Sealey said Lewis shot McNeill.

Additional details of the incident were unavailable, but detectives are continuing to investigate, Sealey said.

“It’s frustrating having a hunt ruined by people riding ATVs where off-road vehicle use is prohibited. Many ATVs look the same so there’s no way to identify violators when reporting the incident to law enforcement. There should be a requirement that off-road vehicles used on public lands have license plates or large decals. Any ATV user who follows the law and land management directives on where they can and can not use these machines should have no objection to this type of identification.”
