The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced its policy on the use of vehicles on the shoreline of seven designated areas around Lake Sakakawea.

Use of vehicles is allowed for fishing and other day use activities.

Shoreline access points for vehicles for the  2010 season are:

Deadman’s Bay (west Wolf Creek), Deepwater Creek (low water), Fish & Camp Court (Deepwater Bay area), Four Bears, White Earth, Renner Bay and Beulah Bay (Pebble Beach).

Vehicles should be used for transporting people and gear associated with day use recreation activities to and from the waters edge.

The public is prohibited from driving ATVs, digging or collecting artifacts, camping or having open fires.   Rules signs are posted at the entrance to these areas.

White or brown fiberglass posts, stating “No Motor Vehicles” aligned perpendicular to the waters edge mark the parameters of the shoreline access areas.

Shore anglers or day-use visitors also can access the shoreline at any existing boat ramp area. Vehicular operation in these areas is restricted within designated parking areas.

The majority of the shoreline along Lake Sakakawea is open to the public via walk-in access. Areas that are closed for preservation of cultural resources and threatened and endangered species will be posted.

"We can't continue to utilize the Black Hills in the fashion we have, particularly in the past 10 years. Just because the hill is there doesn't mean we need to climb it and produce another trail. Those ruts are there for years."
