Talk about wild police chases--there was one in Bradford County Pennsylvania this week that involved a patrol car and an ATV that police clocked at speeds up to 80 miles per hour.

Authorities say a state trooper spotted the All-Terrain Vehicle traveling along Brocktown Road in Monroe Township.

The trooper took up pursuit with lights flashing and sirens blaring, only to have the driver of the ATV slip past the patrol car and flee at a high rate of speed.

The ATV turned into a private drive, and then up a mountain--and stayed there awhile.

When the ATV eventually descended, police were waiting, and arrested 20-year-old James McKean of Towanda, and charged him with reckless endangerment and fleeing and eluding police.

“As a rancher who leases public lands for cattle, I’ve seen my share of cut fences and rangeland damaged by ORV use. I’ve also experienced ORV trespass onto my private lands. But I’ve had no way to identify the culprits when reporting trespass or illegal ORV use to local law enforcement. Congress should require that ORVs used on public lands have visible identification plates or decals. Doing so would remove the anonymity enjoyed by ORV riders who are bent on breaking the rules.”
