The South Dakota Transportation Commission has approved a request to close three segments of state highway road ditches to off-road vehicles.

The sections have had a considerable amount of damage from off-road vehicles.

The three segments to be closed include:

  • SD Highway 115 from Sioux Falls to Dell Rapids.
  • SD Highway 11 through and North of Garretson.
  • SD Highway 17 from Lennox to the intersection of Highway.

These closures do not apply to snowmobiles, off-road vehicles used in normal agricultural operations, or for off-road vehicles being used to service utilities such as gas, water, sewer, pipeline, or telecommunications services.

Signs marking the restricted areas will be placed in coming of weeks. Violation of this closure is a Class 2 Misdemeanor.

“Farmers as a group rarely tend to want more government regulation. But the growing problem of trespassing caused by illegal riders spurred our membership into action to pass common-sense visible identification and ORV enforcement measures. We are proud that we were able to work with rider groups to find a solution that all sides could agree to.”
