Kristi Funderburk VINELAND -- The city is getting stricter on its all-terrain vehicle law in an effort aimed to prevent injuries and deaths. City Council voted 4-1 last Tuesday to amend the city's motor vehicle ordinance. Now, it better defines types of recreational motorized vehicles and clearly restricts the use of ATVs in public parks and recreational areas, City Solicitor Alfred Verderose said. |

David Lien Recently the Colorado State Parks Board made long overdue changes to the state's OHV Grant Program, which will result in more funds being allocated to OHV law enforcement and habitat protection activities. It's common knowledge among hunters and others that OHV overuse and abuse is rampant on Colorado's public lands. Although it's possible this is the result of “a few bad apples,” a Utah Parks and Recreation survey found that 50 percent of dirt bikers and ATV riders prefer to ride “off established trails.” That's half the crate, not just a few bad apples. More recently, the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks surveyed OHV riders and found that 23 percent always or sometimes ride cross-country. |

Authorities are looking for information that can help identify a man who led police on a high-speed chase through downtown Milan while riding an ATV earlier this month.
Saline police began chasing the man and a companion on a separate ATV upon hearing the loud roar of their engines heading south from downtown at about 1 a.m. July 6, according to reports. The men rode side-by-side on Saline-Milan Road at speeds ranging from 75 to 100 mph for several miles with an officer directly behind them, but wouldn't stop. |

Bob Berwyn SUMMIT COUNTY — Depending on who’s talking, off-road vehicle use in Colorado is either part of a multi-use recreational utopia on public lands, or a looming disaster for wildlife and other natural resources. Trying to find a balance between the different viewpoints, the Colorado State Parks board last week added four representatives from the non-motorized recreation community to a committee that reviews and recommends grant funding for trail projects. |

Trent Spiner Despite the best efforts of local volunteers, vandals have destroyed a number of gates blocking traffic into Bow's Nottingcook Forest, also leaving behind trash and damaged hiking trails. Selectmen voted to have the gates installed after the police found a number of people dumping items such as old appliances and roofing shingles in the town-owned forest. The gates were installed two weeks ago. |
