Feds target nudity, safety hazards at off-road meccas such as Glamis

The federal Bureau of Land Management has officially banned nudity in Southern California desert recreations areas under its jurisdiction.

While public nudity always has been an infraction subject to citations, the bureau's action makes it a federal crime, subject to a possible $1,000 fine and/or a year in jail.

ATV joy ride nets Wappinger man DWI arrest

WAPPINGERS FALLS – A town man faces a felony charge of driving an ATV while intoxicated on a town road.
New York State Police on Saturday night arrested Daniel Alexander, 46, after he was reported allegedly operating an all-terrain vehicle on someone’s property off All Angels Road without permission.

New York State Police said when they arrived at the property shortly after 9 p.m. the suspect fled the scene and drove the ATV onto Germaine Lane. Alexander was located soon afterward.

Environment Department urges more control of off-road vehicles

The Santa Fe National Forest is less then a month from issuing a draft plan for managing motorized vehicles, but the New Mexico Environment Department says the agency isn't doing enough to prevent off-roaders from damaging streams.

The long-awaited plan outlining where motorized vehicles will be allowed in the Santa Fe National Forest is at the printer and should be available for public comment by the end of July, according to forest staff. The public will have at least 45 days to comment on the draft environmental impact statement.

Few other counties, states let vehicles drive on beaches

Besides Volusia, beach driving is allowed in at least five other Florida counties, as well as Georgia, North Carolina and Texas, according to a federal report.

Included among those are eight national parks that permit off-road vehicles, including Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts, Cape Hatteras National Seashore in North Carolina, Padre Island National Seashore in Texas and Cumberland Island National Seashore in Georgia, according to National Park Service officials.

Patrols to increase

Law enforcement officials announced an increase in patrols and enforcement of off-road vehicle laws this summer.

The Massachusetts Environmental Police will increase patrols in an area locally known as The Meadows, a Northampton and Hatfield section of the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge.

Editorial: Camden cops right to go after the ATVs

ATVs and dirt bikes in the streets are a danger to residents; confiscate them and punish riders.In Camden, crime runs the gamut, and police, as they must, focus on the serious stuff -- drugs, gangs, guns and violence.

But that cannot mean that other lawbreakers committing lesser crimes are let go. Toleration of any crime leads only to one thing: more of that crime.

Park Rangers Follow Tracks To Catch Suspected Beach Vandals

Park rangers say a Maryland man literally forgot to cover his tracks on the Outer Banks. Now he and another man have been charged with making "donuts" on protected areas of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Daniel Hunt from Maryland and Brian Tillett of Rodanthe were charged with multiple violations.

The Salinas River corridor: Paso Robles to explore new uses for 154-acre parcel

Paso Robles leaders are gearing up to show the public how it can use the city’s newly acquired Salinas River land on the southeast side of town.

The new land management plan — adopted this month by the City Council and required by the state — lays out suggestions for the 154 acres of river corridor the city bought in May. It was purchased for $1.5 million from the John Will family with a state grant intended to protect water quality.

Camden police ask for tips in ATV crackdown

Following their commitment to rid Camden streets of reckless and illegal all-terrain vehicles that are "terrorizing the city and destroying public spaces," police confiscated an additional 11 dirt bikes and ATVs Sunday, Police Chief John Thomson said.

That makes more than 75 vehicles this year.

Teen Driving ATV Leads Deputies on Chase

A teenager driving an ATV led Rockingham County deputies on a chase near Reidsville early Saturday morning, according to the sheriff's office.

A deputy spotted two young men on an ATV around 1:32 a.m. near Highway 87 and Parker Road in Reidsville. When the deputy stopped to see if assistance was needed, the driver on the ATV sped off.
