A Cumberland County man who taunted police for several months while remaining on the run was apprehended this week by U.S. Marshals, the Tennessee Highway Patrol and Cookeville Police Department. The agencies teamed up to capture a fugitive wanted for committing crimes in a four-county area. An elusive Charles Eugene Henry, age 44, was captured at 204 Wilson Rd., in Cumberland County by members of the U.S. Marshals Middle Tennessee Joint Fugitive Task Force. Henry had eluded capture several times while running from Marshals and local law enforcement in the Upper Cumberland area during the last several months. U.S. Marshals have been chasing Charles Henry since January. Most recently, Henry allegedly struck a Monterey Police Officer on May 6 with an all terrain vehicle, when officers attempted to arrest him. He has not been charged with this assault to date. Law enforcement agencies in the area continued to track Henry’s whereabouts until his recent arrest. Henry is wanted by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department for theft of property involving the theft of over $11,000 worth property from Bob Lee of Monterey, date of warrant Sept. 15, 2008. In Overton County, Henry is wanted on a charge of auto theft and felony eluding arrest on Dec. 23, 2008. Henry allegedly stole a 1992 Chevrolet Trailblazer, ran from police, and wrecked the vehicle. In Fentress County, Henry is wanted for stealing an all terrain vehicle on or about Jan. 8, and is charged with theft over $1,000. In Cumberland County, Henry is wanted for violation of parole, original charge manufacturing methamphetamine, date of warrant Oct. 15, 2008. He is also charged with aggravated assault with a weapon (baseball bat). He is accused of assaulting Rodney Sherrill of Crossville, date of warrant Nov. 24, 2008. Henry is being held in the Putnam Count Jail on a $25,000 bond. The Upper Cumberland division of the U.S. Marshals’ Middle Tennessee Joint Fugitive Task Force is comprised of the following officers, all of whom participated in the arrest of Henry: Pat Storie, Putnam County Sheriff’s Department; Steve Mackie, Overton County Sheriff’s Department; Jeff Phann, Tennessee Highway Patrol; and Jodie Odell, White County Sheriff’s Department. “Once they chased our cow into a deep arroyo where it fell and broke its neck. I don't understand how anyone could think chasing livestock is fun.” As a result of the growing conflicts with off-roaders, the Gonzales family stopped their cattle ranching. It doesn't matter whether it is a plate or decal, what is important is that the identification is visible. The police could have tracked down the illegal riders if we had been able to photograph the IDs on their vehicles. I think that would have made them think twice before breaking the law.” - Eleanor Gonzales, private property owner in Santé Fe County, NM |
