The city of Abilene has started prohibiting the operation of motorcycles, bicycles and other all-terrain vehicles in an area northwest of Lake Fort Phantom Hill.

The fenced area is near the intersection of Farm-to-Market roads 600 and 1082.

Tommy O’Brien, director of water utilities, said the area is restricted from use by ATV operators because of destruction of property, dust, pollution and liability.

“The city is not allowing people access to that area,” he said. “The city is restricting people from that area with motorcycles, bicycles and any other type of ATV.”

O’Brien said an organization and its members could enter into a lease agreement with the city of Abilene for use of the area, but currently no one is authorized for access.

“Once they chased our cow into a deep arroyo where it fell and broke its neck. I don't understand how anyone could think chasing livestock is fun.”  As a result of the growing conflicts with off-roaders, the Gonzales family stopped their cattle ranching. It doesn't matter whether it is a plate or decal, what is important is that the identification is visible. The police could have tracked down the illegal riders if we had been able to photograph the IDs on their vehicles. I think that would have made them think twice before breaking the law.”
