Dave Elias MARSHALL COUNTY -- Sheriff John Gruzinskas says ATV riders are becoming a big problem in certain parts of the county. Over the weekend in Viola a man and woman riding an ATV struck a sheriff's patrol vehicle while the officers was issuing a ticket. The suspects got away riding a camo-colored Grizzly ATV. Gruzinskas says in many cases riders are drinking and causing accidents. He says the riders are taking the vehicles onto roadways in remote areas of the county and warns that it can still be dangerous. Anyone who may know who was riding Grizzly ATV that struck the deputies vehicle is urged to call the WTRF Crime Fighters Tipline at 1-800-223-0312. All calls are confidential. “As a rancher who leases public lands for cattle, I’ve seen my share of cut fences and rangeland damaged by ORV use. I’ve also experienced ORV trespass onto my private lands. But I’ve had no way to identify the culprits when reporting trespass or illegal ORV use to local law enforcement. Congress should require that ORVs used on public lands have visible identification plates or decals. Doing so would remove the anonymity enjoyed by ORV riders who are bent on breaking the rules.” - Ambers Thornburgh, second-generation rancher from Oregon who grazes cattle on his private land and adjacent lands leased from the Bureau of Land Management |
