Man allegedly drove his ATV while drunk

Deputies arrested an eastern Kanawha County man accused of riding an all-terrain vehicle while drunk.

Kanawha County Deputy J.M. Vernon was on patrol Wednesday night when he spotted a camouflaged Bombardier Quest ATV heading north on a back lane in Miami near Doug's Draft House.

 

The rider, later identified as John Kidd, 37, of Dawes, was not wearing a helmet and the ATV did not have a registration tag, Vernon said in a complaint filed in Kanawha Magistrate Court.

The deputy said the ATV recklessly swerved right and ran off of the roadway at a high rate of speed before "ramping" over a grassy hill and re-entering the roadway, nearly striking an oncoming vehicle.

Vernon immediately stopped the ATV and noted a strong odor of alcohol on Kidd's breath, the complaint said.

Kidd told the deputy that he'd been drinking with his friends all evening before riding his ATV, according to the complaint.

Kidd failed three field sobriety tests and was taken into custody, the complaint said. Deputies said Kidd apologized for his "reckless driving" while being processed at the sheriff's office.

He was charged with driving under the influence.
