ATV ordinance to be studied further

SHELL LAKE – A new Shell Lake ATV ordinance was discussed and sent back for review by the city council Monday, Dec. 8, in city hall.

The council had been asked by citizens to consider opening Lake Drive to ATV users, so they can access the Wild Rivers Trail, which runs parallel to Hwy. 63 through town. People felt it was unnecessary to trailer their ATVs a few feet if they wanted to go to a neighbor’s house, or to get to the trail. Currently, ATV riders can go through alleys in town, except for the one behind the hospital.

ATVs on area town roads: Fun or asking for trouble?

More and more “ATV Route” signs are popping up around St. Croix and Pierce counties as town boards adopt ordinances to allow the off-road vehicles on town roads.

But some rural residents argue that letting all-terrain vehicles mix with cars and trucks is dangerous and annoying and that the rules are nearly impossible to enforce. At least one town has said no to the change.

DNR suggests against ATV trails

WOODRUFF - New ATV trails should not be constructed in the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest.

That's the recommendation put forth by state DNR officials this week.

For more than two years the DNR has been studying potential new ATV trails that would run through Vilas, Oneida and Iron counties.
