TOWN OF MENA-SHA — With increasing complaints about snowmobiles and all terrain vehicles, police remind residents that operation of the off-road vehicles is restricted. Officer Jason Weber, the department's community liaison officer, said a town ordinance states vehicles that cannot be licensed through the state Division of Motor Vehicles, such as snowmobiles, ATVs, scooters and mini bikes, cannot be operated on any land or roads in the town. He said officers have issued five warnings to operators since last week's snowstorm. Weber said there are exceptions, such as loading or unloading the machine from a trailer, or use for snow removal. -- |

"We can't continue to utilize the Black Hills in the fashion we have, particularly in the past 10 years. Just because the hill is there doesn't mean we need to climb it and produce another trail. Those ruts are there for years." -- Tom Blair, ORV rider and owner of Whistler Gulch Campground in Deadwood, "Changes coming for ATV riders", Rapid City Journal (10/18/09) |
